What Is Included in a Transmission Rebuild?

One of the most common questions we receive at MDC Automotive Repair is, "What exactly is replaced during a transmission rebuild?"

While every transmission is different, a proper rebuild involves much more than simply replacing a few worn parts. The goal is to restore the transmission to reliable operating condition by replacing wear items, inspecting critical components, and correcting any internal damage found during disassembly.

Complete Disassembly and Inspection

Every transmission rebuild begins with a complete teardown and inspection. Each component is carefully cleaned and evaluated for wear, damage, and manufacturer specifications. Any component that is worn beyond acceptable limits is replaced.

Components Commonly Replaced

During a typical transmission rebuild, we replace:

  • All seals and sealing rings
  • All gaskets
  • Friction clutches
  • Steel clutch plates as needed
  • Bushings as required
  • Filters and internal service components
  • Worn or damaged hard parts that fail inspection

Every transmission is inspected individually, and additional components may be replaced depending on the condition of the unit.

New Torque Converter Installation

The torque converter is a critical component of the transmission system. Because contaminants from a failed transmission can remain inside the converter, a new or properly remanufactured torque converter is installed during the rebuild process to help ensure long-term reliability.

Cooler System Inspection and Flushing

One of the most overlooked parts of a transmission repair is the transmission cooler system. If contamination remains in the cooler or cooler lines, it can quickly damage a newly rebuilt transmission. That's why we:

  • Flush the transmission cooler system
  • Flow-test the cooler for restrictions
  • Verify proper cooler operation before returning the vehicle to service

This important step helps protect your investment and promotes long-term transmission life.

Experience Matters

Transmission rebuilding requires specialized knowledge, precision measurements, and attention to detail. With nearly four decades of automotive repair experience dating back to 1988, Mike Cole and the team at MDC Automotive Repair have helped customers throughout North Georgia and the surrounding region keep their vehicles operating reliably.
