Why Should You Turn Off Your Vehicle While Pumping Gas?
Most people know they should turn off their vehicle while pumping fuel, but many don't know why. While safety is the primary reason, modern vehicles also have sophisticated emissions systems that can be affected when fuel is added with the engine running.
The Safety Reason
Gasoline vapors are highly flammable. Although fuel stations are designed with numerous safety systems, running engines, hot exhaust components, electrical systems, and static electricity can all increase the risk of ignition around open gasoline vapors.
Turning off your vehicle while fueling is a simple, fundamental safety precaution that helps eliminate unnecessary ignition risks.
How Fueling Affects Your Vehicle's EVAP System
Modern vehicles use an Evaporative Emissions Control System (EVAP) to capture and prevent fuel vapors from escaping into the atmosphere. The vehicle's computer constantly monitors this sealed system for leaks and proper pressure changes.
When you add fuel with the engine running, you open the fuel cap or filler neck, opening the sealed system to the atmosphere. The vehicle may interpret this sudden loss of tank vacuum or pressure as a major system leak. If the powertrain computer happens to be running an EVAP monitor test at that exact moment, it will store a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) and illuminate the Check Engine Light.
Common EVAP Trouble Codes
Problems or false readings related to the EVAP system may trigger specific codes involving:
- Small leak detection
- Large leak detection
- Purge valve system performance
- Vent valve system faults
- Fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor concerns
In many cases, simply fueling with the engine running is the direct cause of these false test results and subsequent warning lights.
A Simple Habit That Helps Prevent Problems
Turning your vehicle off before fueling helps:
- Significantly improve gas station safety
- Allow the EVAP system monitors to run under proper engineered conditions
- Reduce the possibility of false check engine trouble codes
- Protect long-term emissions system operation
It's a simple step that takes only a few seconds and can save you an unnecessary trip to the shop for a reset.
Check Engine Light On?
If your Check Engine Light is illuminated after a recent fueling stop or you're experiencing ongoing EVAP system problems, our technicians can perform a complete diagnostic inspection to isolate the exact cause.
